Following on the great success of the Saint John Art Centre’s (SJAC) 2013, 2014, and 2015 fundraisers due to the kind support of sponsors and attendees, the popular event is back for 2016 to answer the burning question:
“What’s in the Box?”
On Thursday, April 21st from 7-9 pm, join us for an entertaining evening of delicious food, fine drink, and an opportunity to support your community arts centre! You’ll also have a unique chance (by draw) at purchasing a “mystery box” containing an original artwork, which has been generously donated by a local professional or emerging artist.
Tickets are $75 and limited to 200 so don’t delay! Funds from this event support SJAC’s important Artists’ Rights Fees program.
The Saint John Arts Centre is proud to provide “Artists’ Rights Fees”, which are paid to all artists, both professional and amateur, who exhibit in the four galleries of the Saint John Arts Centre. This program began in January of 2015.
The level of payment, ranging from $500 – $100, is determined by which gallery an artist or group of artists is exhibiting in. For a solo exhibition, the artist will receive the total amount. For a group exhibition, the amount will be divided amongst the artists exhibiting. Funding for the “Artists’ Rights Fee” is provided through money raised from the Saint John Arts Centre’s fundraiser, this year scheduled for April 21st.
Although not at the level of payment of a CARFAC fee, (a nationally recognized fee paid to artists who exhibit in non-commercial galleries) this is a significant step forward in meeting the need of artists to receive some kind of compensation for allowing their work to be exhibited to the public.
The Saint John Arts Centre has long been recognized as a leader in the arts community in New Brunswick and will continue to find ways to expand their capabilities to better serve their vibrant and diverse art community.
“What’s in the Box?” happens Thursday, April 21st from 7-9 pm.
