The Coalition for Better Salmon Management, (CBSM), has put out a press release calling on DFO to reinstate Grilse harvest tags for the balance of the 2017 salmon fishing season. Numbers of fish in the Miramichi system continue to improve slightly.

This weekend we move through June and into July. Canadians will celebrate 150 years as a country on Saturday, July 1. So we wish all a Happy Canada Day! As well we extend similar greetings to our Americans as they will celebrate their country’s birthday on Tuesday, July 4.

Salmon and a few grilse are moving slowly into the system with a few each day, but no run to speak of. There are also good numbers of shad now in the river. Gradually, the striped bass are dispersing from the spawning grounds to other rivers and bays in the Gulf region.

Spring or black salmon are basically finished except for the very odd straggler. Bright salmon and sea trout are starting into the system, and the numbers of striped bass being caught are gradually increasing as the water warms a bit. The 2017 Miramichi Striper Cup takes place this weekend.

This week was pretty slow for angling and pretty fast for all rivers in the system. Last weekend’s rain brought rivers to extremely levels, some not seen here in many years. Not only were they high, but they were raging beyond flood stages.

Fishing this week depended where you were. From the mouth of the Cains down the water was very high and dirty while above it was fishable and catching was good for spring salmon. Striped bass was sporadic with some places good and others just producing a few here and there.

Spring salmon season appears to be quite good in most places and slower to average in others. Striped Bass are sporadic at best thus far, with a few here and there as the water is still too cold for good fishing.
