Uptown Mugs #34 – Amy Allen

Uptown Saint John is very lucky to have Amy Allen working for us as our marketing intern for her Business Administration work practicum with NBCC. Amy not only has valuable advanced skills and experience in this field, but brings with her enthusiasm and personality plus. From St. Martins, Amy is a country girl, but definitely with city appeal. She is married to her high school sweetheart Rick, and is mom to two beautiful girls. She balances family and school/work with impressive ease.

Amy has quickly become part of our uptown family and we know she will be a huge asset to her prospective future employer. We certainly are enjoying our time with her! Star quality, right here.

Let’s get to know Amy …

Where were you born?
I was born and raised in St. Martins, and have lived and worked in the Saint John area my entire life. I have no plans to ever leave this beautiful place we call home, I am a true Maritimer at heart. I will raise our little family here and build my career in the city.

How long have you been a part of the uptown scene?
I actually began my career, and developed my passion for marketing, in the uptown (many moons ago) with a contact centre in city hall. After about 5 years, the company moved their office and I lost touch with uptown life. It is great to be back now, after spending so many years in other parts of the city. I feel I have a new appreciation for the sense of community here, and my experience with Uptown Saint John has reintroduced me to the amazing network of people and businesses that live, work, and play here.

What is your ultimate favourite snack food?
I would say I have an unhealthy obsession with Skinny Pop popcorn, which comes in an enormous bag from Costco. I mean, it says “guilt-free snack” right on the bag, what’s not to love? Sometimes I even share it.

Name one or two people who you look to for inspiration?
I would have to say that during my recent studies with NBCC, my marketing instructor Michelle Robichaud has truly helped me to pull through some challenging times (a business plan in 5 weeks, for example!). She has consistently pushed (shoved!) me outside of my comfort zone, so much so that it is almost a habit now, and I am incredibly thankful to her for that. I would also say that my career passion has been fuelled by my amazing cousin Jenn Jackson-Martin of Acadia Broadcasting. She has supported me throughout my quest for a college diploma, truly understands the working mom life, and shares my passion for all things marketing!

Coffee, tea, or other?
I swear I would not have made it through the last two years of college without coffee! It has truly been my fuel for both early morning tests and late night assignments and studying. I would like to thank my family and coffee for their support …

What is your Uptown Insider Tip?
My girls are always so impressed and amazed by the bustling activity uptown. A walk around the boardwalk, up King Street and around the square with a camera (they just love posing with the Hooper statues!), along with a trip to Freak Lunchbox is a fun and inexpensive family outing. It’s like being a kid in a … oh wait …
