Tree Removal and Memorial Relocation in Rainbow Park
The City of Saint John, in collaboration with the Province of New Brunswick, will commence tree removal in Rainbow Park later this week to prepare for the construction of the new south end school. The affected area will be roped off during the tree cutting process.
As part of this project, the Turner Brewer Memorial will be temporarily removed to facilitate the construction. All items related to the memorial will be carefully stored.
In 2022, the Province of New Brunswick announced that Rainbow Park has been selected as the site for a new state-of-the-art kindergarten-to-Grade 8 school and community hub in Saint John’s Central Peninsula. This new facility will replace the aging Prince Charles and St. John the Baptist King Edward schools and will have a capacity of 522 students. The Community Hub will include an early learning centre for up to 116 children and community programming space.
To accommodate the new school, proposed changes to Rainbow Park include shared use of the park for both the school and the public, with parts of the park reserved for exclusive access during school hours. Proposed improvements to Rainbow Park include:
- A new tot lot playground
- Community garden
- Dog park
- Reoriented basketball court
- New location for the Turner Brewer Memorial
- Continued operation of the splash pad
- New seating, fencing, lighting, and landscaping features
