Uptown Saint John welcomes this thrift shop that Courtney Figler opened up just a few weeks ago. Her new venture is more than just a shop; it’s a way for her to spread kindness throughout the community. Currently, it is a non-profit that primarily serves folks with justice system involvement and is working towards registering as a charity. Yes, this thrift store sells brightly coloured outfits, but it also has a “take what you need, leave what you can” with food goods, hygiene products, and other helpful items people might need.
She has painted the walls of this little shop with bright colours and fun designs, giving it a personality that matches with gently used & vintage clothing sold here. She also carries shoes, bags, and household items. On the clothing racks, you will find women’s style clothing, sizes ranging from XS to 3X, and soon there will be a gender-neutral section.
Courtney is a social worker who wanted to help the community more through her shop. Any gently used clothes donated to the shop will either be sold in the shop or donated to someone in need. She accepts gently used bras that will be donated to shelters here in New Brunswick. As her business grows, she will be offering education and employment training for people in the justice system (launching in April). The shop is also working towards providing some direct aid-type programs; the food pantry (to be filled by donations and revenue from the shop), an emergency housing fund for next winter, and scholarships for local college programs.
