MONCTON – The Magnetic Hill Irving opened it’s charging station for electric vehicles this morning, completing the first phase of NB Power’s fast-charging stations along the TransCanada Highway. Oct 23, 2017 by Huddle Staff
The first one was commissioned earlier this summer at the Irving Lincoln Big Stop. The Magnetic Hill station is the final one of 10 fast-charging stations that have been opened in the last few months.

NB Power estimates that there are only 100 electric cars in use across the province, but an official with the corporation said the charging stations will help encourage more widespread use of a car that’s better for the environment.
“NB Power is proud to ‘lead the charge’ in establishing [the] infrastructure needed to support the adoption of electric vehicles in New Brunswick,” Keith Cronkhite, senior vice-president of business development and strategic planning at NB Power, said in a release.
“Using the NB Power eCharge Network’s charging stations for electric vehicles, New Brunswickers can save significantly on fuel costs and lessen their impact on the environment.”
The new charging station will serve a relatively small customer base, but owner Jason Lutes says it’s still a valuable asset for his station.
“We’re thrilled to work with NB Power to offer a new energy option for our customers at the Magnetic Hill Irving,” said Jason Lutes, owner of the Magnetic Hill Irving. “Electric vehicle drivers can now stop here to recharge while enjoying our service station’s amenities.”
The province’s eCharge Network is now made up of 19 standard level-2 (240 Volt) and 10 fast (400 Volt) charging stations located throughout the province.
The 10 fast-charging stations are located about 65 kilometres apart on the TransCanada Highway from Edmundston to Aulac.
The long-term plan for NB Power is to enable drivers of electric vehicles to travel around New Brunswick.
Tesla, which is releasing a mass-market electric car next year, will also contribute to the charging station network in the province. It recently announced that it would open stations in Saint John, Fredericton, Moncton and Woodstock as part of a nationwide network.
