Saint John Energy to Light up Lily Lake Trail in Rockwood Park

sjenergySaint John Energy has donated a leading edge solar digital lighting system that will extend the use of the Lily Lake Trail in Rockwood Park. The gift was announced at the Monday July 20 meeting of Saint John Common Council.

The project will see the installation of approximately 26 programmable solar-powered lights along the 0.38 km length of the Lily Lake Trail. The entire cost of the lights and the installation will be borne by Saint John Energy. It is estimated the project will cost $250,000.

“Energy Efficiency continues to be a focus for Saint John Energy,” said Ray Robinson, President & CEO, Saint John Energy. “This system demonstrates our commitment to energy efficiency and we can’t think of a better place to introduce this leading edge technology than at Rockwood Park — one of the jewels of Saint John.”

The smart lighting system is designed by Illumient and will feature remote diagnostics and renewable photovoltaic technology. Photovoltaic technology is a method of converting solar energy into direct current electricity.

“This generous gift will enable park users to enjoy the trail for longer periods of time – especially in the winter,” said Saint John Mayor Mel Norton. “This gift from Saint John Energy shows their continued commitment to our community.”

The ongoing maintenance costs of equipment replacement will become the responsibility of the City of Saint John – these are estimated at $64,000 over a 20 year period. Although full design details and a project schedule are still being determined, installation is expected to begin late summer.
