Conserve water, only water lawns when necessary, and less frequently.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nSaint John Water is asking citizens to help conserve water during what is proving to be a very hot, dry season. With the consistent heat across the region over the past two months, water levels at the City\u2019s watersheds \u2013 Spruce Lake (west) and Latimer Lake and Loch Lomond (east) \u2013 have dropped, leaving the City\u2019s water supply low.<\/p>\n
In an effort to conserve water and ensure that there is a sufficient amount for drinking and other necessary uses, citizens are encouraged to be mindful of their non-essential usage.

\n<\/em>Water conservation tips for the home:<\/strong><\/p>\n\u2022 Only water lawns when necessary, and less frequently
\n\u2022 Only wash vehicles when necessary, and don\u2019t run the hose when you do
\n\u2022 Fill the sink or a basin when washing and rinsing dishes
\n\u2022 Only run the dishwasher and washing machine for full loads
\n\u2022 Take short showers instead of baths
\n\u2022 Turn off the water to brush teeth and shave
\n\u2022 Use a broom to clean walkways, driveways, decks, rather than hosing off these areas
\n\u2022 Repair leaky faucets, indoors and out<\/p>\n
Low water levels at City watersheds increases risk of turbidity in drinking water \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nDue to low water levels, the natural sediment around the edges of the City\u2019s watersheds (lakes) has been exposed. With a heavy and intense rainfall forecast for yesterday, there is an increased chance that the exposed sediment could mix into the water and cause it to become cloudy, or turbid.<\/p>\n
Should this occur, the Latimer Lake and the Spruce Lake Water Treatment Facilities will be limited in their treatment capabilities, and an increase in turbidity could interfere with the effectiveness of the disinfection process. Saint John Water continuously measures and monitors turbidity in the source water and will be prepared should water quality be compromised and there be a need for a boil water order.<\/p>\n
The need for citizens to help conserve water, and the increased risk of a boil water order will continue until such time as the lakes are replenished.<\/p>\n
