Keeping Our Streets Safe & Clear, All Year Long
To support safer winter storms and smoother year‑round street maintenance, City Council approved an update to the Traffic By-law at last night’s meeting. This update increases administrative penalties for key parking violations that interfere with Public Works operations.
Illegally parked vehicles make it difficult for Public Works crews to plow, remove snow, and maintain streets, impacting safety and slowing service for everyone. Increasing penalties encourages better compliance so crews can do their work efficiently.
These changes come into effect on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 and the Traffic By-law violations impacted by the penalty increases include:
- Section 5(3)(c) Bus Zone
- Section 5(3)(d) Loading Zone
- 5(3)(e) No Parking
- 5(6) No Parking – Snow Ban, 23:00 to 07:00
- 5(7) No Parking in Winter – 00:01 to 07:00
- 16(2) Alternate Side Parking – 1 to 15 day of month
- 16(3) Alternate Side Parking – 16 to last day of month
- 16(4) No Parking, 00:01 to 07:00
- 16(5) Alternate Side Parking, Dec 1 – Mar 31, Schedule H2
- 16(6) Alternate Side Parking, Dec 1 – Mar 31, Schedule H2
- 16(9) Alternate Side Parking, Dec 1 – Mar 31, Schedule G2
- 16(10) Alternate Side Parking, Dec 1 – Mar 31, Schedule G2
The penalties for the violations listed above would increase according to the schedule in the table below. The amounts vary based on the timeliness of payment, following the same payment periods currently set out in the By-law. In addition, the penalty for offences related to these violations will rise from $100 to $125, which is the maximum allowed.

These adjustments will apply year‑round to support all seasonal maintenance, including spring and summer street sweeping.
