Fall Back, Stay Safe!

A Safety Reminder from the City of Saint John Fire Department

This Sunday, November 2, 2025, as you turn your clocks back for daylight saving time, take a moment to protect your home and loved ones.

Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery

It’s a simple habit that can save lives. When you adjust your clocks, also replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

🚨 Why It Matters:
Most fire-related deaths happen between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. when families are asleep. A working alarm gives you precious seconds to escape safely.

✅ Quick Safety Checklist:

  • Test Your Alarms Monthly: Press the test button to make sure they’re working.
  • Replace Batteries: Do this when you change your clocks or sooner if needed.
  • Install Alarms Properly:
    • Smoke alarms should be in every bedroom, in hallways near sleeping areas, and on each level of your home.
    • Carbon monoxide alarms should be on every level, especially if you use fuel-burning appliances.
  • Know What to Do:
If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get outside or near fresh air immediately. Call for help and stay there until emergency crews say it’s safe to go back inside.
  • Practice Your Escape Plan:
Make sure everyone in your household knows two ways out of every room. Practice together so everyone is prepared.
  • Keep a Fire Extinguisher in the Kitchen:
It’s your first line of defense in case of a cooking fire.
