City of Saint John Recognizes Local Hero with Council Commendation
At last night’s Council meeting, Mayor Donna Reardon and Common Council presented a Council Commendation to Matthew Baxter in recognition of his courageous actions at the Little River Reservoir earlier this summer.
While working near the water, Mr. Baxter heard a cry for help. Without hesitation, he dismantled nearby construction fencing and dove into the water, still wearing his full construction gear and work boots, to rescue a child in distress.
“It kinda hit me when I was hitting the water what I was doing,” said Mr. Baxter. “Thankfully I had some training behind me from my years in the Canadian Armed Forces, but a lot of it was just a feeling of it being the right thing to do.”
The Council Commendation is a heartfelt expression of appreciation for individuals, businesses, or groups whose distinguished efforts have enriched the community at the municipal or regional level. While typically presented at the annual Civic Awards ceremony, commendations may also be awarded in response to extraordinary acts of service.

“Matthew’s bravery, resourcefulness, and willingness to act in a critical moment reflect the very best of our community spirit,” said Mayor Reardon. “We are proud to honour him on behalf of the citizens of Saint John.”
