City of Saint John Keeps Trails Closed To Protect The Community and Parks During Dry Conditions

August 25, 2025 (Saint John, N.B.) – The City of Saint John is keeping its trail systems, including Little River Reservoir, Rockwood Park, and Tucker Park, closed to public access for now, even though the Province of New Brunswick has lifted its closure of crown lands as of 12:01 a.m. tomorrow. This decision is made to protect the community and the City’s green spaces while conditions remain extremely dry and the fire risk is high.

The City will keep trails closed until there is a significant improvement in the fire risk, including a healthy amount of rainfall.

Fire Chief Rob Nichol supports the decision, saying, “Rockwood Park and our other trails are heavily wooded and still extremely dry. They are also all very close to residential neighbourhoods. Even a small spark could spread quickly and cause devasting damage. Temporarily keeping them closed is the safest option for residents and ensures we don’t risk losing these spaces. We appreciate the community’s understanding and support.”

Residents are reminded that a province-wide burn ban remains in effect. While trails are closed, there are still safe outdoor spaces to enjoy, including beaches, playgrounds, Harbour Passage, and city squares.

The City will continue to monitor conditions closely and reopen trails only when it’s safe. Safety and the long-term protection of our parks and trails remain our top priorities.
