Celebrating Parker’s Corner: Honouring A Legacy Of Love and Inclusion in Saint John
The City of Saint John is proud to formally recognize the corner of Carmarthen and Mecklenburg streets as Parker’s Corner, a tribute to the late Parker Grant Cogswell, an inspiring advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, inclusion, and community spirit.
Born in 1964, Parker came out in the early 1980s; a time when LGBTQ+ visibility in Saint John was just beginning to emerge. Through courage and compassion, Parker became a mentor and role model, helping others navigate their own journeys with dignity and pride.
His mother, Judith Meinert-Thomas, was a trailblazer in her own right. She co-founded the Saint John chapter of PFLAG, organized the city’s first Pride parade, and championed equality across generations, all inspired by her love for Parker and her vision of a more inclusive Saint John.
Parker’s work in Saint John’s food service industry, especially at Thandi’s, was more than a job – it was a way to build community. Through house parties, gatherings, and legendary Halloween dances, Parker created joyful, welcoming spaces at a time when few existed. In his final years, he and his husband, André Gallant, found comfort in the gatherings that took place at the very corner that now bears his name.
Following Parker’s passing in October 2020, the City of Saint John began the process of officially naming the corner in his memory. Parker’s Corner now stands as a lasting tribute to love, resilience, and the power of living authentically. It is a symbol of Saint John’s commitment to inclusion and the enduring impact of those who lift others through kindness and courage.
