City Expanding Waste Wise With Medical Waste Support program

Saint John residents who need to dispose of extra garbage due to medical conditions are now able to apply to receive additional garbage bag tags through the City of Saint John’s new Medical Waste Support program.

The new program is designed to help those who qualify by providing 52 excess garbage bag tags per year at no cost to the resident. To qualify, residents must currently receive solid waste collection from the City (single family homes or apartment building of four units or less) and they must apply annually.

“The City is always looking for ways to enhance services and work towards creating a more accessible and inclusive community,” says Tim O’Reilly, Director of Public Works for the City of Saint John. “This program is a result of valuable feedback and we’re happy to ensure Waste Wise works well for more and more residents.”

In order to protect the privacy of residents, all tags provided are standard City of Saint John excess garbage bag tags. To apply, residents must fill out a form which can be found online on the City’s website or in-person at the Customer Service Centre, which is located on the Ground Floor of City Hall, at 15 Market Square.

The Medical Waste Support program is being offered as part of the City’s enhanced Waste Wise service which introduced curbside recycling collection, garbage bag limits, continued collection of compost, as well as service efficiency and safety improvements.

Since its launch in October 2022, the Waste Wise Program has exceeded its environmental targets, reducing garbage by 43 per cent on average, well above the initial 15 per cent reduction goal. The increase in recycling and compost rates has resulted  in over 115,000 bags of garbage being diverted from the regional landfill.
