Important Changes To The City’s Traffic By-Law

Following the approval of Common Council, several sections of the City’s Traffic By-Law have been updated.

The Traffic By-Law regulates the motoring and pedestrian traffic within Saint John. Items covered in the by-law include parking restrictions, traffic flow regulations, school zones, speed limits, pedestrian areas and other regulations.

Listed below are important changes effective immediately in coordination with on-street regulation signage:

University Avenue:

  • No stopping at any time on University Avenue travelling eastbound from Millidge Avenue until the first break in the centre median (an approximate 30 metre distance).
  • The speed limit will be reduced from 60 KM/H to 50 KM/H.
  • Traffic lanes will reduce from two to one lane in each direction.
  • A dedicated bike lane will be added in both directions.

School zone speed limits:

  • All current 40 KM/H school zone speed limits will be reduced to 30 KH/M.
  • A new school zone speed limit of 30 KM/H will be established for Divine Mercy Catholic School.

Alternate side parking:

  • Existing Alternate Side Parking regulations for streets located in the North, East, and West of the City will now only be in effect between December 1 – May 31 each year.
  • Tartan Street will become an Alternate Side Parking street, also in effect between December 1 – May 31 each year.
  • There are no changes to Alternate Side Parking regulations for streets in the South Central Peninsula.
