Kelly Stanton is a supervisor in the Public Safety Communications Center in Saint John. She is one of the four remaining operators that have been with the Centre since its inception in 1995. Kelly claims that there is nothing boring about working in the Centre, “This job is definitely not for the faint of heart but challenges you every day in a high stress, fast paced environment where calls are never the same.”
Despite the challenges, Kelly describes the benefits, “It’s rewarding to know you’ve helped someone usually at their worst time of need – most people will only need us less than a handful of times in their lifetime. One of the calls I’ll remember forever is helping deliver a baby over the phone until the responders arrived. The male caller was too excited to look to see what gender the baby was until I asked him to look – it was a successful conclusion – it was a boy! I’ve got to work and support some of the finest and dedicated first responders with the Saint John Police Force and Saint John Fire Department along with my co-workers in the PSCC and think of them as my second family.”
