Krista Wilson has been an operator with the Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC) since its inception in 1995. She is currently a supervisor in the Centre:
“One call I remember was back in February of 2021. It was a bitterly cold day and we received a report of an elderly gentleman with Alzheimer’s disease who had gone missing from his home. His family had already been searching for him for a couple of hours before calling police. The call very quickly became an all hands on deck type of situation. Through the power of social media, word spread quickly throughout the community and the PSCC was receiving numerous possible sightings. Officers from all over the city were aiding in the search. The K9 unit was deployed and a neighboring police service brought in their drone. Every tip that was called in was relayed to officers in the street. A little more than two hours later a citizen noted a gentleman matching the description walking by his home. He brought the man into his home to warm up and called it in. Although cold, the man was fine and reunited with his family. This type of call displays the teamwork utilized not only within the PSCC, but also with the emergency personnel involved in the search.
