SAINT JOHN “CHAMP” REFLECTS ON WAR AMPS 100TH ANNIVERSARY

SAINT JOHN, NB – July 16, 2018 – The War Amps is this year celebrating its 100th anniversary. What began as an Association to assist war amputee veterans returning from the First World War, has expanded its programs over the years to support all amputees, including Emma Coakley, 12, of Saint John.

Emma was born a right hand amputee. She has grown up with The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides financial assistance for the cost of artificial limbs and recreational devices. She also attends regional CHAMP seminars where “Champs” and their parents learn about the latest in artificial limbs, dealing with teasing and bullying and parenting an amputee child.

“The War Amps has been there for me since I was a toddler. They have provided me with financial assistance for the cost of my bike device, piano and guitar devices, and my swim device. I can do anything I set my mind to do and I’m as active as anyone else,” says Emma. “Happy 100th anniversary War Amps and thank you for everything.”

Executive Director of the CHAMP Program, Danita Chisholm says, “Although the Association has developed many innovative and unique programs over the past 100 years, there is still much to do to ensure amputees like Emma have the artificial limbs they need to lead full and active lives. With the public’s support of the Key Tag and Address Label Service, our vital programs for amputees will carry on long into the future.”

The War Amps receives no government grants and its programs are possible through public support of the Key Tag and Address Label Service

The War Amps is celebrating its 100th anniversary! Our programs have grown over the years from assisting war amputees – whom we still serve – to all amputees, including children. Today, we still have much to do to ensure amputees have the artificial limbs they need to lead independent and active lives. With the public’s continued support of the Key Tag Service, our vital programs for amputees will carry on long into the future.
