The Owners of Mrs. Dunster’s Buy McBuns Bakery in Moncton

SUSSEX – Blair and Rosalyn Hyslop, the owners of Mrs. Dunsters, announced Thursday that they have finalized an agreement to purchase McBuns, a much-loved family bakery in Moncton.

“[It’s] another crown jewel in New Brunswick,” said Blair Hyslop in a phone interview. “It’s been in business for 33 years. It’s well-entrenched in the market in Moncton, and it has great employees.”

The McBuns brand is well-known and popular in the Moncton area, so the name will remain even though it’s becoming part of the Mrs. Dunster’s family of brands.

The employees will also become part of the Mrs. Dunsters family.

“One of the greatest challenges we have is finding qualified bakers to accommodate our growth,” said Blair. “With McBuns we get some capacity and some great talent.”

Huddle spoke to the Hyslops shortly after they met with McBuns’ 62 employees, and Blair said they were excited to join the Mrs. Dunsters team, which will grow to 240 when the McBuns deal is closed at the end of January.

“It went really well,” Blair said about the meeting. “People were excited about the fact that it was another New Brunswick company and another family-owned business. I think they see the opportunities for themselves in a larger organization with people that are passionate about baking.”

It was the second major acquisition this month for the Hyslops. They finalized an agreement to purchase Kredl’s Corner Market in Hampton three weeks ago.

McBuns Bakery, which traces its roots back more than 30 years in Moncton, is owned by the Buckler family. The company operates a bakery and retail store on Shediac Road in Moncton and a Retail Store on Mountain Road in Moncton. The company also distributes to a wide variety of restaurants and retail stores in the Moncton area.

Buckler is pleased that another family is buying the bakery, and excited to be in a new role as part of a larger company.

“Blair and Rosalyn are committed to the traditions of a family-run business, and are well-respected in the industry as good operators,” said Buckler in a release. “Those things were important to us and I’m excited to have the opportunity to continue in the industry in a new role. McBuns and Mrs. Dunster’s are a great fit for one another.”

With the acquisition of Kredl’s and now McBuns, the Hyslops are growing their offerings of products to distribute throughout the Maritimes and Maine.

“Between the two bakeries, we’ll have 450 different items,” said Blair. “Anything you could possibly imagine coming from a bakery we have – from fine pasteries to wedding cakes to white bread, cookies and donuts, pies, muffins and all that stuff.

We now have the largest assortment of baked goods available in the Northeast. And then we have a best-in-class distribution system going to every store in the Maritimes and Maine. If you put those two things together, the possibilities are enormous we think.”

Steve Buckler, owner of McBuns, will joining Mrs. Dunster’s management team as the Director of Operations. In his new role, Buckler will oversee the companies four local bakeries in Sussex, Hampton, Moncton, and Borden, P.E.I.
