The Saint John and Fredericton police forces and the RCMP conducted a joint security exercise on June 28 in Saint John. Exercise Galleon Reticle was supported by the Department of Justice and Public Safety and took place near a local high school.
“Your government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all New Brunswickers,” said Justice and Public Safety Minister Denis Landry. “Security exercises are valuable in helping law enforcement and other agencies prepare in the event of a threat to our communities. I congratulate all agencies for their participation and I thank the community for their support during the exercise.”
The exercise is part of a three-year project, funded by Defence Research and Development Canada’s Centre for Security Science, to develop and test new approaches and concepts in security to develop best practices to share with other jurisdictions.
“We welcomed the opportunity to participate in an exercise of this magnitude,” said Saint John Police Chief John Bates. “We were eager to join with our partners to collectively test our capacities and capabilities so that if called upon we will be prepared to respond effectively and efficiently on behalf of those we are sworn to protect.”
“The Fredericton Police Force was very pleased to be involved in this exercise,” said Fredericton Police Chief Leanne Fitch. “This learning and integrated response training is an effort in the right direction to prepare in the event of a serious emergency crisis.”
“New Brunswick is a small province and all law enforcement agencies work very closely at all times, but particularly when there’s a major incident,” said Chief Superintendent Ross White, the RCMP’s Core Policing Officer for Criminal Operations in New Brunswick. “These types of exercises allow us to see what works well and where we can make improvements in the event of an emergency situation.”
The Galleon series of exercises is intended to develop New Brunswick’s security capacity so that governments at all levels, the private sector, and the security, intelligence and law enforcement community can work collaboratively in the areas of mitigation, preparation, response and recovery.
