Helpline for NBers looking to Welcome Refugees

refugeesThe provincial government has opened a toll-free helpline for New Brunswickers looking to help welcome Syrian refugees. The number is 1-855-444-6554.

Callers to the helpline will be asked for specific details of the support they are able to provide plus their contact information.

“New Brunswick has a history of helping refugees and I know this giving spirit will continue,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry. “As we prepare to welcome Syrian refugees to our province, I encourage all New Brunswickers to find out how they can help make our newcomers feel at home.”

A webpage has also been set up with multiple resources.

“Our government is working closely with municipalities, settlement agencies, community groups and other government agencies to prepare for the arrival of refugees,” said Landry.

Identifying and approving refugees for resettlement in Canada is solely the responsibility of the federal government. Provincial government departments are working on internal plans of action for providing service to the newcomers.

The Saint John Y Newcomer Connections have a federally-funded Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) in place and are experienced and qualified to assist with refugee resettlement.
